Translation by Asta McCarthy:

Only Circus Renz offers Vienna a nice and sufficiently roomy stage, and yet, this one too was not able the day before yesterday to accommodate the masses streaming to the opening of the performances. The first performance, which was visited by their Majesties the Emperor and the Empress and several members of the 'very highest' court, had a very favorable success. Even though nothing new of any importance was offered, the order of the pieces was of great variety, and all were executed very precisely. Mr. Renz himself rode two new school horses, and Mr. Stonette had his three dogs, who belong to the definite favorites of Vienna, prove that they did not forget anything, but "have also learned a lot". That Mr. Renz did not immediately on the first night let Miss Julia Pastrana appear, was quite in order, he wanted to show that such exotic plants were not necessary to attract the audience. Only today, the combination of man and orangutan, this small, well-nourished girl with the monkey head, was introduced because of the general urge for scientific instruction. When the moment came closer that "the lovely would show herself", that excitement and unrest which is always the sign of highest tension, overpowered the big audience, and deepest stillness ruled, when Miss P. graciously hopped onto the big carpet laid out in the middle of the arena. The audience proved that good manners push back impressions of quite odd style, even though looking at Miss P in Circus Renz, because of the large room, only satisfies the curiosity about something unusual and strange.

Hereafter, the 'guardian' of the hairy Julia made the Miss talk and sing in English and dance Scottish. The tone of the Miss is not too unharmonic, but her dance, especially concerning the movements of her small feet, is truly gracious. She danced a 'Scottish' just like Lydia Thompson, and when you drew a mental line from the brunette non-beauty to the blonde curlyhead of Miss Lydia, it offered a striking contrast. At the end, after the audience had become used to the interesting Mexican, she was lead around the colonnade and the balustrade for closer view and appraisal during which she conversed with the audience in a rather affable way, which caused an elderly Viennese gentleman to call out "She is a rather agreeable creature!"
